The PGA remains on the West Coast for the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles. Riviera Country Club is a great course. Even if players hit the target, they can still get into trouble with hard fairways that cause the ball to roll in any direction. I play with those who are at a distance from the tee and who are confident on the green. Here are two full head to head tournament matches you can bet on.
Brendon Todd +105 vs. Billy Horschel
Todd has two misses in his last four starts, so it’s worth supporting him as an underdog. However, Todd’s skills in the short game fit well with Riviera’s field layout. Since offside accuracy from the tee is less important, Todd can use his play around the green to catch up. He ranks 11th in number of hits scored on the green. More importantly, Todd is one of the top players in the field for donning Poa annua greens; On this surface, Horschel has the worst statistics. Between two short game specialists, support the player who has the most recorded rounds on the Riviera. Horschel missed cuts for several consecutive years, losing blood to his short game.
Justin Rose +100 vs. Jordan Spit
Rose has made good progress on the Riviera. Rose has four top 20 finishes at this field, but not at the Genesis Invitational. Rose has become a more consistent player lately, making him a solid target for more money making opportunities. In three of his tournaments this year, Rose has placed in the top 20 twice, including winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. In all three tournaments, he won shots on the ball, around the green and from tee-to-green. Spieth pulls away from T6 at the Phoenix Open. However, in the four tournaments he has played this year, Spieth has lost hits in almost every category in three of those tournaments. He may have found his game in Arizona, but the Riviera is unforgiving and Speth needs to prove it to me first.
