Pogacar climbs to Paris-Nice lead with fourth stage win

Two-time former Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar moved up to first place in the Paris-Nice overall after winning Stage 4 on Wednesday.

Slovenia’s Pogacar edged out France’s David Gauda by a second and Switzerland’s Gino Meder, who was third, 34 seconds back in overcast conditions in central France.

The 23-year-old Pogacar of the UAE Team Emirates has overtaken Magnus Cort Nielsen in the general classification for the yellow jersey of the so-called “Race to the Sun” which ends Sunday on the Côte d’Azur in Nice.

Last year’s Tour de France winner Jonas Wingegaard was knocked down by Pogacar on the final climb to the La Loge des Gardes ski resort at 1,077 meters above sea level, and the Dane is now 44 seconds behind to take third place overall.

Groupama-FDJ’s Gouda is sandwiched between Pogacar and Vingegor, six seconds behind the 2020 and 2021 Tour champions.

Stage five on Thursday is a 212.5km drive from Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise to Saint-Paul-Trois-Château with four test climbs as the peloton heads towards the foothills of the Alps.
