It is not clear why the four UNM students wanted to “lure” Peak to the campus, other than wanting to “attack him”, or if they knew Peak before the fight. The 17-year-old girl was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and conspiracy. according to Las Cruces Sun News. Two others have been identified, although no charges have been brought against them. The investigation is still ongoing.

Peak was not charged, and the police called him “the victim” in a statement.

Peak has averaged 9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game this season, second with the Aggie.

“The entire Lobo community is shocked by this incident, and we mourn the death of one of our students and the injuries sustained by another,” New Mexico State President Garnett Stokes said in a statement. “The impact of this experience is life-changing for so many and will go far beyond expressing grief and loss – and far beyond the Lobo community. I cannot express how deeply I am saddened by this tragedy on so many levels.”
