Key storylines, players to keep an eye on

Portugal have so many incredible talents in midfield and attack that they need to go deep in this tournament. Ronaldo is the main player at the top, but Bruno Fernandes, Joao Felix, Rafael Leao and Bernardo Silva will all be key. Throw in the defensive class of Ruben Diaz, Joao Cancelo and a resurgent Diogo Dalot and you have a talented team. The inclusion in midfield of Ruben Neves, Otavio and Joao Paligny shows the incredible strength of the team that Fernando Santos has put together. Anything less than a quarter-final is a disappointment.

Ghana has many recent additions to its ranks as Tariq Lamptey (Brighton), Mohammed Salisu (Southampton) and Inaki Williams (Athletic Bilbao) have become Black Stars regulars. Jordan Ayew and André Ayew are threats at the top and Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is the focus of this team. Keep an eye out for forward Mohammed Quddus who is having a good season at Ajax.

Wales took a point from the United States and are now turning their attention to Iran with an opportunity to put pressure on their other group opponents in a 5:00 pm ET Friday match at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan.

The Welsh are back to draw 1-1 against USMNT on Monday in the first leg of the 2022 World Cup for both teams and will feel like they could have won. Instead, they know that a victory over Iran will put them at the top of the group before England and the Americans play their second legs later on Friday.

Meanwhile, Iran is suffering a crushing 6-2 defeat by England. Team Med 4:0 after 60 minutes and 6:1 in stoppage time.

Mehdi Taremi scored both of Iran’s goals and will join Sardar Azmoun hoping it was just a match problem against a very good England.

Key storylines, players to keep an eye on

Wales boss Rob Page went out of his way to praise Bale for his penalty won and converted, but Harry Wilson was probably the player most dangerous to the party. Will Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson, a late substitute, be able to join Bournemouth’s Kieffer Moore at half-time in the first start of the competition?

Iran needs to find Mehdi Taremi frequently and hopefully Sardar Azmoun will be fit and shooting after needing a helper to come out against England on Monday. Also of note is whether Iran’s starting goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand will return from the injury that cost him most of Monday’s match, or whether it will be Seyyed Hossein Hosseini again.

It’s take two for the Qatari hosts as they greet a desperate Senegal at the Al Tumama Stadium in Al Khor on Friday.

Qatar lost 2-0 to Ecuador in the first leg of the tournament on Sunday, and Senegal lost to the Netherlands by the same score a day later.

Senegal were solid defensively until late in the evening when Cody Gakpo and Davy Claassen scored goals to give Louis van Gaal’s men a big three. But the lions of Teranga found life without Sadio Mane as difficult as expected from their attack.

Qatar, meanwhile, has been out of its depth against Ecuador’s CONMEBOL team and will have to rally its resolve and pride on home soil.

Key storylines, players to keep an eye on

Gold Cup top scorer Almoes Ali came close to scoring for Qatar against Ecuador so the hosts will know they can create chances. Could the quick finish remind Qatar of better days as they have won four friendlies in a row since October, beating Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Albania?

Senegal put a lot of pressure on Ismaila Sarr and the quick winger did not disappoint, joining Boulaye Dia as a productive but ultimately no-scoring striker against the Netherlands. Premier League stars Sheihou Kouyate and Nampalis Mendy were effective in midfield, but Idrissa Gana Gouye was not at his best.
