After a break before the 2022 World Cup, the Premier League is back with a bang and the start of 2023 has been a lot of fun.

Who look like title contenders and/or favorites?

Nearly halfway through the 2022-23 season, Arsenal and Manchester City look head and shoulders above the rest, although Newcastle have no intention of leaving and Manchester United have entered the fray.

The Gunners will be busy during the title challenge as Erling Haaland continues to storm the Premier League with an almost unbelievable goalscoring record.

An uneven Tottenham Hotspur hangs in the battle for the top four, with Liverpool struggling to stay in the Champions League scrap. Chelsea have a lot of work to do, while Fulham and Brighton are oddly on the fringes and have great campaigns.

Michael Olies scored arguably the best free kick of the season to give Crystal Palace their share of points and a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Selhurst Park on Wednesday.

Manchester United took a 1-0 lead from the 44th minute after Bruno Fernandes put the ball past Vicente Guaita to open the scoring. The Red Devils had several key chances to double their lead and end the game, but their implementation was poor (only four of 15 shots on target).

Erik ten Hag’s side narrowly missed three points as David de Gea made three saves at 1-0 in the second half. That was until Olize landed his stunning shot from almost 25 yards at a sharp angle far from the net.

De Gea covered most of the field as he climbed over the net and dived high towards his left post, but the ball dived under the crossbar at the very last moment. De Gea couldn’t get close to that as the 21-year-old midfielder left and south London exploded.

A win would put Manchester United (39 points – 3rd) above two-time defending champions and rivals Manchester City, thanks in part to their triumph in Saturday’s derby, but instead a draw leaves them tied on points and the blue half of the city at the top by goal difference (from +28 to +8). Crystal Palace (23 points) meanwhile remains in 12th place in the Premier League table, now just five points off the top half of the table and eight points off the relegation zone.

What we learned about Crystal Palace vs Manchester United

The backbone of Manchester United: from a fatal mistake to the foundation

For many years, Manchester United’s top priority during transfer windows has had to be a world-class defensive midfielder to make the team more consistent and consistent on both sides of possession. However, for years directors ignored the “no”. 6 in total and signed one flashy, expensive intruder after another. Some of these stars scored goals, some didn’t, but one of the recurring moments was that Manchester United’s defense was overwhelmed by big, equal, and undersized opponents.

With Casemiro now encamped at the base of midfield, Rafael Varane and Lisandro Martinez forming a solid pairing in the center of defense behind him, and Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen pulling strings in front of the Brazilian, Manchester United’s backbone is better than ever. since the team was built around Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidić and Paul Scholes.

Ever since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013, Manchester United, with the brief exception of José Mourinho’s “good times”, have been very easy to play against and through and beat. This is no longer the case, the backbone of the Red Devils is now becoming the strength of the team.

Crystal Palace vs Manchester United reaction

Eric ten Hag, on the result…

“We lost two points. When you win with two minutes left…

“They don’t create anything but one that was a corner and this one was a free kick from long distance. You don’t expect to lose points. We have to invest more in order to score the second goal and then not be in a situation where a good moment will cost you two points.

“We were leading 1-0. In the second half we had a lot of room to kill them and go for the second. I have never seen us really go after the second goal.

“Hard to say [why]. I have to criticize my team. Go for the second one. Bruno and Rashi on the flanks, Garnacho with a lot of creativity, speed and power, and McTominay with penetration from behind.

Start: 3:00 pm ET, Wednesday.
TV channel: Peacock
Online: Broadcast via Peacock Premium

Key storylines and fit players to watch

Palace have looked a bit lethargic in attack in recent weeks as they have lost four of their last five games and failed to score in all four of those defeats. Patrick Vieira has all the offensive options available and it just doesn’t seem like he’s getting the right players together. Palace need a big win to start the season as teams below them start to pick up victories and the Eagles no longer feel comfortable in the middle of the table. Vicente Guaita was great against Chelsea and Wilfried Zaha needs to get back to his brilliant form at the start of the season.

United are on the rise and Marcus Rashford is the man of the moment. He has scored seven goals in his last six games and has been on a roll since returning from the World Cup. Casemiro dominates midfield, Bruno Fernandes dictates the game and Luke Shaw has been a revelation as a left centre-back. This is the best United have seen in a long time and Erik ten Hag knows they still have a lot of room for improvement. This is the sweetest thing for United when it comes to this long winning streak. They haven’t gotten close to top gear yet, but they’re finding a way to win victories and look solid defensively.

Crystal Palace team news, injuries, squad options

James MacArthur and Nathan Ferguson remain injured, while Joachim Andersen is in doubt after being hit by Chelsea. This could mean USMNT defender Chris Richards will make his first Premier League start.

Manchester United Team News, Injuries, Squad Options

Donny van de Beek is out for the season with a knee injury and Jadon Sancho is not out but is working on his recovery. A hot Marcus Rashford needs to get rid of a hip problem while Diogo Dalot is taking no chances as he recovers from a hip injury. Wout Weghorst could make his United debut after joining Burnley on loan. We’ll soon see just how strong this United side is as Erik ten Hag will need to switch places a bit, especially ahead of the big game against Arsenal on Sunday.
