it nearly here. While there has long been debate about whether the 2022 World Cup will arrive in Qatar, the winter tournament will take place on the fields of the Middle East over the next five weeks.

The mid-season has provided plenty of intrigue and injury, but there are still plenty of traditional favorites as Brazil, France and England compete to be named World Cup winners.

Iran scored a goal in the 98th and 100th minutes to beat 10-man Wales 2-0, securing an emotional and hugely important victory.

On the field and beyond.

WATCH FULL MATCH REPLAY

After a tight and tense game, Iran was the top team in the second half and had huge chances as Sardar Azmoun hit the post twice. Wales were reduced to 10 late when Wayne Hennessy rushed from his line and defeated Mehdi Taremi.

Rozbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezayan then scored for Iran in the 98th and 101st minutes, the first of whom delivered a stunning shot from outside the penalty area, and the second a neat shot after a counterattack.

The result means Iran enters their final group stage game against the US, knowing that a win could put them in the bottom 16 depending on how the US plays against England.

Wales will play England in the last group game and must win and hope for help to be in the last 16.

Wales don’t show up as Iran cuts them on the counter

Iran deserved this victory and was the best team for most of the game. Wales did not show up for this game, nor did they show up in the first 45 minutes against the USA. This Iranian side felt it and they disallowed the goal, Azmoun hit the post twice and Wayne Hennessy and his defense were too often forced into action. Wales has simply never been in control of this game and if the US watches this clash they will be extremely wary of Azmoun and Taremi who lead the group stage final. The Iranian players are fighting as one on and off the field, and this victory was a momentous moment for them.

Mahdi Taremi: Gave Iran a focus and the whole attack went through him. What a talisman for this Iranian side.

Ramin Rezayan: Furious display on the right in defense and popped out late to score a well-deserved goal.
