MADRID. Rafael Nadal will try to play at Wimbledon after “wasn’t limping for a week” thanks to a new treatment for his painful left leg, the 22-time Grand Slam champion said Friday.

“I intend to play at Wimbledon,” Nadal said in his home island of Mallorca. “If things don’t go the way we would like, then we’ll see what happens. (But) I’m happy. I’ve been limping for a week now.

Nadal said after winning his 14th French Open nearly two weeks ago that he was unsure if he could continue playing with severe leg pain. He was only able to finish Roland Garros after numbing his leg with painkillers, a method the Spaniard said he would not want to repeat.

A slight improvement in a chronic condition that had plagued him for years came after Nadal visited a clinic in Barcelona last week to undergo radiofrequency treatment for ailing nerves.

Nadal, 36, said if this latest attempt to make his foot’s condition more bearable doesn’t work, he will consider surgery, a move he admits could call into question the continuation of his career.

Nadal also spoke about his future as a first father after Spanish media reported this week that his wife, Maria Francisca Perello, was pregnant.

“I don’t know how this will change my life, I don’t have the experience (of being a father), but I don’t plan for it to mean changing my professional career,” Nadal said.

Wimbledon starts June 27th.

Two of Nadal’s record 22 Grand Slam singles titles were won by the All England Club.
