The Europa League finalists were only five minutes behind the start of the new campaign when Joel Nouble tossed the ball over John McLaughlin.

The Rangers started with three newcomers in John Suttar, Tom Lawrence and Antonio Colac, but it wasn’t until another new player, Malik Tillman, arrived at half-time that Giovanni van Bronkhorst’s men began to count their possession superiority.

Colac was categorically ruled out for an offside goal as VAR were not due to make their debut in the Scottish top flight until the end of this season.

The Rangers finally equalized in the 74th minute when Arfield headed into the far corner from a Ryan Kent cross.

Just two minutes later, Tavernier hit the winner in style with a top nine free kick.

Celtic will start the Scottish Premier League defense on Sunday when Hoops host Aberdeen.
