Report: Bears ‘leaning toward’ trading No. 1 pick in upcoming NFL Draft

Not surprisingly, the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft will be moved.

ESPN reported Monday morning that the Chicago Bears are “leaning towards” trading their No. 1 pick. The Bears went 3-14 last season, but general manager Ryan Powles has publicly stated the franchise’s commitment to rebuilding with Justin Fields as quarterback.

The Bears have not achieved victories for four seasons in a row and need to update the entire roster. With so many quarterback-hungry teams in the league, the Bears could get a sizable package in exchange for a better pick, allowing them to fill the depth table with young talent.

The Bears selected Fields with the 11th overall pick in the 2021 draft. Despite the difficulties of the team, Fields showed a genius. In his first season as a team starter, Fields threw for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 11 touchdowns, adding 1,143 yards and eight points on the ground.

Earlier this offseason, Powles said he would have to “go crazy” to draft the No. 1 quarterback.

The first pick in the draft has not been traded since 2016, when the Los Angeles Rams went from 15th overall to 1st overall to pick Jared Goff. In a deal with the Tennessee Titans, the Rams traded their first-round pick, two second-round picks, a third-round pick, a future first, and a future third. In addition to the top pick, the Rams also got fourth and sixth round players in the deal.

The Bears are likely to expect a similar comeback of multiple draft picks.

The top quarterbacks available in the upcoming draft include Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s CJ Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Lewis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson.

The annual NFL scouting camp begins this week. The Poles will certainly be busy.
