Report: Brewers reach $3.5M deal with ex-Marlin Anderson

Milwaukee — The Brewers have reportedly signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the former Miami Marlins third baseman/right fielder. Brian Anderson.

The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity as no deal has been announced.

The person said that Anderson could earn an additional $2 million in performance bonuses. The Athletic first reported that Anderson had made a deal with the Brewers. Sportsgrid first reported on the terms.

Anderson finished fourth in 2018 NL Rookie of the Year voting and had an OPS over .800 in 2019 and 2020, but has struggled with injuries for the past two seasons. The Marlins opted out of signing Anderson to a contract for the 2023 season, making him a free agent.

Last season, he batted .222 with eight homers and 28 RBIs in 98 games while batting .311 percent on base and .346 slugging percentage. This followed the 2021 season, which saw Anderson hit .249 with seven homers, 28 RBIs, a .337 percentage on base and a .378 slugging percentage in 67 games.

Anderson, who turns 30 on May 19, has a .256 career average with 57 homers, 233 RBIs, a .341 percentage on base and a .410 hitting percentage. All of his major league experience has been with the Marlins.

His ability to play in multiple positions should give Brewers manager Craig Counsell more flexibility with lineups.

Jace PetersonLuis Urias and Mike Broso shared time at third base with the Brewers last season, but Peterson has since signed with the Oakland Athletics, and the versatile Urias may play second base more often this year after the trade. Kolten Wong at the Seattle Mariners. Wong has been the Brewers’ starting second baseman for the past two years.

Owen Milleracquired from the Cleveland Guardians during the off-season, also has experience playing in third place, but has played first or second more often.

The Brewers’ main right fielder last season was Hunter Renfrowho was traded to the Los Angeles Angels. The Brewers acquired another corner outfielder when they Jesse Winker in the Wong trade. They also have field prospects Sal Frelik and Joey Wymer on the cusp of the Majors.
