Giants and agents Daniel Jones reportedly had made progress to an agreement on Friday. A day later, a message comes from NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero that the parties are due to leave Indianapolis on Sunday, “with no visible contract decision.”
This is as the franchise tag deadline approaches.
If Giants and Athletes First reps don’t come to an agreement by Tuesday afternoon, the team is expected to use the franchise tag on the quarterback. If they come to an agreement, then the giants can use the tag on the run back. Saquon Barkley.
A report this week indicated that Jones’ agents are asking for more than $45 million a year on a long-term deal. This raises the possibility that the Giants will apply the franchise’s non-exclusive tag, giving them the right to leave Jones with a $32.416 million one-year offer.
The Giants didn’t exercise Jones’ option for a fifth year, so he should become a free agent later this month.
He ends his best season throwing for 3,205 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions and rushing for 708 yards and seven touchdowns. The Giants advanced to the postseason and beat the Vikings in the wild card round before losing to the Eagles in the divisional round.
