San Jose Sharks forward Timo Meyer is widely regarded as the best player available before the March 3 trade deadline, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are among the teams interested in pursuing him. according to Kevin Weeks of NHL Network.
According to Weeks, the New Jersey Devils, Vegas Golden Knights, and Carolina Hurricanes are also potential fans.
Meyer has 30 goals and 51 points in 54 games for the Sharks this season. He leads the NHL in 5-on-5 shooting, 5-on-5 individual chances, and 5-on-5 individual expected goals with 99 hits per Trick with natural characteristics. The 26-year-old would be a great addition to any opposing team’s top six, and he will certainly benefit from improved lane mates as the Sharks start tanking.
The Sharks divorce had been planned for months, and Meyer recently spoke about the problems with the constant mention as an object of trade.
“It’s definitely not easy,” Meyer said. Mike Zeisberger of NHL.com. “This is a difficult part of our business. Sometimes you need to remind yourself to think about the task ahead, not go crazy in your head, but just go and have some fun.
“The guys are fun to work with, although we haven’t had much success. It’s nice to win and it definitely changes the mood when we do it. To me, you can only focus on what you can control.”
Meyer has a $6 million cap but will need a $10 million qualifying offer this summer to keep his rights unless the team that acquires him strikes a long-term deal in the interim or trades him after the season ends. San Jose will likely demand a first-round pick plus at least a prospect in exchange for Meyer.
At this point in their careers, Meyer and teammate Erik Karlsson just don’t fit into the Sharks’ schedule. Meyer had the best season of his career in 2021/22, scoring 35 goals and 76 points, and is scoring 77 points this year. He is a power forward with an innate sense of how to position himself for the best chances to score.
Meyer has spent his entire career with the Sharks since being selected ninth overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, but it looks like his time at the club is coming to an end and better days are just around the corner.
