Report: Nicolas Batum opting out of Clippers contract

Clippers sign new contract Nicholas Batum last year on a relatively cheap 1+1 Non-Bird Exception contract that looked intended to allow him a big raise after the team defended his Early Bird rights this offseason.

Batum takes the next step in that apparent plan by ditching his $3,328,530 player option for next season.

The Clippers may re-sign Batum under the Early Bird program (which is projected to be worth $50 million over four years). The deal includes a starting salary of $11 million – apparently much more than Batum’s option salary – plus a multi-year guarantee for the 33-year-old.

While this will further raise the luxury tax in Los Angeles, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has proven his willingness to spend money to maximize the roster. And Batum maximizes the roster.

Batum is a versatile frontcourt player who can defend in multiple positions and even play in the center of smallball. It pairs well with Kawhi Leonard as well as Paul Georgeboth switching defensively and keeping the ball moving and adjusting it to create space for attack.
