The suspense surrounding the Cleveland Browns quarterback’s room is arguably the biggest storyline on the field in the NFL so far this offseason. Deshawn Watson’s legal troubles there have been some updates but he still faces four civil charges and possible NFL discipline.
The team’s starting quarterback for the past three-plus seasons, Baker Mayfield, also has an uncertain future. Despite the possibility of a lengthy suspension for Watson, it’s unlikely the Browns or Mayfield will want to stay together in 2022.
Another team that made sense was the Seattle Seahawks. The current competition between Drew Locke and Gino Smith is not impressive. According to Josina Anderson, the Seahawks are really very interested in Mayfield:
At one pointSeattle’s head coach Pete Carroll said the team is unlikely to add another veteran quarterback, but those public talks mean little.
The Mayfield deal will improve the Seahawks’ passing game and possibly give DK Metcalfe more reason to sign a long-term contract. Interestingly, Anderson notes that they may be interested in expanding if they also add Mayfield.
For now, like the rumors about the Panthers, nothing matters until a deal is struck. For now, Mayfield and the Browns are still linked to each other.
