Rookies Madris, Contreras lead Pirates to 7-1 win over Cubs

PITTSBURGH – Bly Madris hits his first major league home run and becomes a rookie Roanci Contreras pitched five solid innings to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.

Madriz connected in the sixth inning for a solo hit to right center Mark Leiter Jr. to close the scoring. It came the day after Madriz scored three goals on his major league debut.

Contreras (2-1) allowed one run and four strikes, three strikes and two steps. He gave up four attempts in each of his previous two starts.

Anthony Gang, Chris Stratton and newbie Yerry De Los Santos combined with four scoreless relief innings.

Michael Perez also homered for pirates, and Daniel Vogelbach went 2 on 2 with two walks and two RBIs. Pittsburgh won its third game in a row, losing 11 of 12.

Cubs Rookie Matt Swarmer (1-3) five runs allowed – four earned – and five hits in four innings, with him losing his third start in a row. He had five strikeouts and two walks.

Jason Hayward had two strikes for the Cubs, who lost for the 13th time in 15 games. Patrick Wisdom accounted for their only run with a 461-foot lead on a homer in a bullpen in center field leading into the fourth inning.

Wisdom’s drive came after the Pirates scored in each of the first three innings to take a 5–0 lead.

Ke’Bryan Hayes led first from three and scored on Brian Reynolds“Sacrificial fly”. Perez Homered in the second, then Vogelbach and Oneil Cruz hit RBI singles in the third. Another try scored in an inning on a catcher. Wilson Contreras‘ throw error.

Fogelbach’s goal double in the fifth round made the score 6:1.


The Cubs pick right-handed rookie Caleb Kilian to Triple-A Iowa and recalled Leiter from the same club. Kilian was 0-2 with a 10.32 ERA in his first three career starts.

Lefty Sean Newcomb was sent immediately to Iowa after receiving refusals. He has until Wednesday to accept or reject the assignment.

The Pirates acquired left-handed pitcher Eric Stout from the Cubs for cash and sent him to the Indianapolis Triple-A. Pittsburgh opened a spot on the 40-man roster by moving the OF Jake Marisnik from the list of victims in the COVID-19 IL.


Cubs: RHP Markus Stroman (right shoulder inflammation) threw his first bullpen since being put on the injured list on June 9.

Pirates: LF Ben Gamel (left hamstring strain) is due to begin rehab in Indianapolis on Wednesday.


Cubs: RHP Keegan Thompson (6-2, 3.27 ERA) will start Wednesday night. He had six scoreless innings against Atlanta in the last game without a decision after being tagged for 12 runs in 3 2/3 innings in his two previous starts combined.

Pirates: RHP Jerad Eickhoff will be called up from Indianapolis, where he is 4-3 with a 4.84 ERA in 13 games, including six starts. The 31-year-old played in the big leagues with the Texas, Philadelphia and New York Mets.
