Saints put WR Michael Thomas on IR and he will undergo surgery

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas has been placed on injured reserve, head coach Dennis Allen said Thursday.

Thomas sprained his second toe in his right foot in Week 3 against the Carolina Panthers and did not return to the field. The team was initially optimistic that Thomas could take three or four weeks off his injury and return, but Thomas would have surgery instead.

He likely won’t be back until the end of the season, or at least Allen doesn’t expect him to return this year, he told reporters.

After the team’s doctors reviewed a recent MRI, Allen said: “The finger didn’t respond as we hoped. … It didn’t heal the way everyone hoped.”

It’s a huge blow for Thomas, who hasn’t played for almost two years due to a high ankle sprain he suffered in the first week of the 2020 season. Thomas attempted to play on the ankle after missing six games, but went to the reserves in mid-December due to injuries.

Thomas faced an onslaught of obstacles while trying to recover from an ankle injury, even suffering a hamstring injury while in rehab and head-butting then-head coach Sean Payton over an operation he ended up undergoing.

Thomas called his return to the field in the summer of 2022 a “blessing”. His ankle injury seemed to finally be a thing of the past in September when he played for the first time in 21 months, scoring two touchdowns in a Week 1 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Thomas has recorded 16 receptions for 171 yards and three touchdowns in three games this season. Most likely, in the spring he will return to the field.
