BERLIN. Runner-up Maria Sakkari advanced to the second round of the Berlin Open on Tuesday with a 6-3, 6-2 win over France’s Léolia Janjan, while Andrea Petkovic delighted home fans by upsetting Garbiñe Muguruza.
Petkovic beat fifth-placed Muguruza 7-6(8), 6-4, her first victory over a top 10 player since defeating Petra Kvitova at the 2019 US Open.
For reaching the quarterfinals, the German will play with the Belarusian Alexandra Sasnovich.
Sakkari, who avenged her loss to Zhanjan in their only previous encounter in 2013, will next face Australian qualifier Daria Saville.
Ons Jaber started her season on grass with a win, beating Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-3.
Playing for the first time since a shocking first-round loss at the French Open, fourth-placed Jabeur put in a solid performance, saving all four break points the Czech opponent faced.
Top-seeded Jaber, who reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals last year, will play US-qualified Alicia Parks.
The Tunisian will also team with the returned Serena Williams to play doubles in Eastbourne next week.
“Very happy to be paired with Serena,” said Jabeur. – When I found out about this, I was in seventh heaven with happiness. Such a privilege for me.”
Belinda Bencic beat Germany’s Jule Niemeyer 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in another second round match against Anna Kalinska. Bencic beat the Russian in the same round in ‘s-Hertogenbosch last week.
