On Monday, Georgia received a commitment from one of the nation’s top linebacker prospects in the class of 2023, four-star Barnesville (GA) Lamar County. CJ Allen announced his pledge to the home state of the Bulldogs. At 6’1″ and weighing 217 pounds, Allen was ranked 60th overall in the 2023 cycle and ranked 3rd nationally by linebacker in his class at Top247.
Allen has an exceptional overall sports profile with deep, multi-layered context regarding impact on the pitch and participation in various sports. According to numerous recent NFL Draft results for linebacker prospects, Allen’s strong two-way involvement and three sports work very well in the long run.
Not only did Allen run a confirmed 40-yard dash in 4.62 seconds at June 2021 MVP Camp, he also added an encouraging context to track and field this spring when he qualified for the Class AA regionals in Georgia in the 100m. He set a personal best of 11.16 seconds and qualified for the Georgia State Shot Put by throwing 45’6″.
Those feats in junior track and field came after he ran 11.18 100 as a sophomore in the spring of 2021. Allen also adds basketball to his sports roster, ending his junior season with hoops averaging 7.7 points per game.
All this multi-sport data follows an outstanding youth football campaign in autumn 2021. He earned Georgia Region 3-AA Player of the Year honors with 1,080 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns for 9.6 yards for a carry. Defensively, Allen made 91 tackles, three sacks, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery while playing primarily as linebacker.
Over the past three seasons, Allen has recorded 84 tackles, 90 tackles, and 91 tackles in chronological order. He enters the 2022 season with 181 tackles, 14 1/2 tackles for loss, five sacks and four interceptions in the last two years, in addition to his 1,600+ yards and 25 touchdowns.
Allen is the ultimate footballer who most likely could play the Power Five ball as a running back. Yes, his profile meets many of the requirements of a prospective off-the-ball midfielder, but the record is also backed up. The athleticism and suddenness are evident, and his physique is the prototype of most recent higher-round draft picks in this position. Here’s more info from the 247Sports national team about the big addition in Georgia:
Cooper Petagna, 247, national sports analyst:”Possessing arguably the most athletic profile of any midfielder in the class, it’s hard to argue that there’s a better player on the pitch. CJ Allen than the Georgia Bulldogs. At 6’1″ and 217 pounds, Allen is one of the most unique linebacker prospects in the country, demonstrating the dynamic speed and athleticism needed to play at the center of Georgia’s defense. With a recent 11.16 over 210 pounds over 210 pounds, Allen’s speed and ability to play both sides of the ball help him stand out from the crowd. Although it will take him a year or two to develop, Allen has all the makings to be another Bulldogs quarterback to be called on the first or second day of the NFL Draft.”
Chris Singletary, 247Sports National Analyst:”CJ has an athletic profile that is hard to argue with as he has also shown results on the pitch. His speed and instincts give Georgia another playmaker at base linebacker. It still has room for more mass, which will only make it more powerful and explosive. With the training he will receive and the ability to excel in this scheme, his future in Athens will be bright.”
Andrew Ivins, Analyst, 247Sports Southeast:”I really like his profile. Obviously you have that record time, but he also has snaps on the attacking side of the ball and he can drive up to the basket and score. I think CJ is a Sunday guy, but for me the main takeaway from this news is that the Dawgs just keep getting loaded with certified defensive freaks. I mean last year it was Mykel Williams, Big Starks, Marvin Jones, Jaheim singlet, Daylen Everett, Jalon Walker, Carlton Madden, Julian Humphrey, and others. Now it’s Allen and AJ Harris with a lot of other guys in the game.
