Serena Williams’ comeback cut short by Jabeur injury

Serena Williams’ return to tennis was cut short after doubles partner Once Jabeur withdrew from the Eastbourne tournament with a knee injury.

At the WTA event, tennis great Williams, 40, played her first two competitive matches since she left last year’s Wimbledon in tears due to a hamstring problem.

Teammate from America and Tunisia Jabeur made it to the semi-finals with a narrow last 16 victory over Maria Buzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo, and then a more convincing quarter-final win in straight sets over Shuko Aoyama and Chan Hao-jing.

Williams will now focus on Wimbledon, where she accepted a wild card in women’s singles in a bid to win a record 24th Grand Slam title.

She will find out who she will face in the first round when the draw takes place on Friday.
