Commissioner Roger Goodell has the right to personally deal with Deshawn Watson appeal hearing. He won’t train him.

According to a source familiar with the situation, Goodell will not consider Watson’s appeal. He will take the matter to someone outside the league office.

We don’t know who it is. A decent guess would be Mary Jo White, given that she’s recently done various “independent investigations” for the NFL, and in light of the fact that she’s very good at giving her client what they want.

Regardless of the specific name of the person hired to handle Watson’s appeal, the key to getting more of this work is to give the client what they want. Even if the league calls a person “independent”, in fact it is not. They will have some hope of a permanent business relationship with the league, and this will affect the decision-making process.

A separate source familiar with the process suggested that the commissioner on appeal could be Condoleezza Rice, who is set to formally become part owner of the Broncos next week. Again, she won’t be truly independent; she is going to become a shareholder of one of the league teams. However, her reputation will help the league convince the media and fans that it can put other interests aside and make the right decision.

However, Rice is an avowed fan of the Browns. Recently, Fig. commented on the disciplinary proceedingsadvocating the importance of maintaining an open mind, but recognizing the seriousness of the issue.
