The UFC kicked off its February schedule with the heavyweight main event, and Sergei Spivak has been making big strides.
Spivak (16-3) defeated Derrick Lewis (26-11) in the final of UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas. The Polar Bear defeated Lewis via armbar in the first round, thus earning the biggest win of his career.
“Today my time has come,” Spivak said after the match. “The polar bear is coming.”
Spivak had an almost flawless match against Lewis as his superior wrestling skills kept the opponent off balance throughout the fight. By the end of the round, Spivak was delivering thunderous ground strikes and eventually locked into a triangle of arms, forcing Lewis to tap.
Spivak is now on a three-fight winning streak with a win on Saturday. The Moldovan fighter scored two victories in 2022, defeating Augusto Sakai and Greg Hardy by TKO with punches. Lewis, who fought twice for the heavyweight title, has lost four of his last five fights.
Prior to the fight, Lewis was ranked No. 8 on Sportzshala’s heavyweight rankings while Spivak was not ranked.
After Saturday’s performance, Spivak will likely receive a number next to his name next week.
