Stacey Lewis will now have two chances to captain the US Solheim Cup.
Lewis, who last February was named captain for this year’s matches taking place Sept. 22-24 at Finca Cortesin in Andalusia, Spain, will also captain Sept. 13-15 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va. , announced the LPGA on Monday.
“It’s such an amazing honor to be captain of Team USA again in the Solheim Cup,” said Lewis. “Getting the first call was one of the best moments of my career and I am truly grateful for this second opportunity. I’ve said it many times: representing the United States and wearing our colors is an experience that stands out in any player’s career. To be able to lead the best players in our country twice, especially in 2024 outside of our nation’s capital, is a true privilege.”
Lewis, a two-time major tournament winner and former world No. 1, played for four Solheim Cup teams and was due to compete for a fifth time in 2019 before pulling out due to injury. She has worked as an assistant at Solheim twice, in 2019 and 2021.
Next year’s matches will be the second time in a row for the Solheim Cup. First time in 2002-03. The event is returning to alternating even years to avoid conflict with the Ryder Cup, which returned to odd years in 2021 due to the pandemic.
Lewis faces a difficult task as the European team, although trailing 10-7 in an all-time series, won two Solheim Cups in a row.
“Stacey has already shown herself to be an outstanding captain as she prepares for the 2023 Solheim Cup,” LPGA commissioner Molly told Mark Samaan. “She embraced the role in every way and implemented several innovative ways to help her team achieve peak performance, including using cutting-edge data and analytics. Her experience in the Solheim Cup, proven leadership and passion, combined with the many benefits of stability in 2023 and 2024, led the selection committee to enthusiastically invite Stacey to become team captain in 2024.”
