Chase Claypool believes in himself.

So much so that the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver thinks he’s one of the top three wide receivers in the league.

“I know for a fact that I’m not like the rest of the guys in the NFL,” Claypool said. . “I know I’m in the top five receivers. I know I’m in the top three receivers.”

Claypool will have to prove it this fall, as his numbers from his first two seasons in the league don’t bear it out.

Claypool had 860 receiving yards and two touchdowns with 59 receptions last season, his second most in the league. He had just one game for 100 yards last season and has failed to gain more than 41 receiving yards in the last five games of the season.

His 860 yards was the 35th best in the league.

While that doesn’t qualify him for a top 3 finish in the NFL, it’s definitely unfair to accuse him of poor production. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger struggled late in the season before retiring, and the Steelers finished 23rd in offensive yards per game and 21st in points per competition. They also finished better than just two teams in yards per completion average.

However, Claypool’s confidence leaves a lot to be desired. And with the Steelers’ new offense this fall – Juju Smith-Shuster left for the Kansas City Chiefs and a new quarterback to lead the franchise – Claypool clearly feels he’s ready to lead not only their new offense, but the league as well.

“When I work, I’m like, ‘I’m a dog. I will also go after people lining up in front of me,” he said in a podcast. “And I just have to bring this confidence, and I have to bring this spirit, and I just have to show people. And it will happen.

“And we’re going to rewind it and we’ll see this clip in a while and they’ll be like, ‘Damn, he was right.'”
