Taylor Heinicke: Whatever decision they want to make at QB, let’s go

The Commanders won for the third time in their last four games, knocking out the previously undefeated Eagles on Monday night and Taylor Heinicke was a starter in all three of those victories.

Heinicke was 17 of 29 for 211 yards and an interception in what was the quarterback’s last game on Monday. Carson Wentz must concede while on injured reserve. Commands head coach Ron Rivera said last week that Wentz is quitting as he recovers from a finger injury, but after Monday’s win, there was no word on whether Wentz would return to practice this week.

Rivera said he believes Heinicke has grown as a quarterback over previous seasons, and said any quarterback plans for the future will be discussed on Tuesday. For his part, Heinicke said he felt “a lot more comfortable and a lot more confident”, adding that he wouldn’t be disappointed if the team decided to put him back on the depth chart.

“Not at all. I said it back in the OTA that we invited Carson in the starting lineup,” Heinicke said at the post-match press conference. “If my number is called, I will be ready to enter. Whatever decision they make, let’s go. If I support Carson next week, great. I’m going to help him in any way I can to get ready for the Texans game. The most important thing for me is just to win. Let’s keep winning whether it’s playing or not.”

The Commanders went from 2-4 to 5-5 after the Wentz injury, which is a pretty strong argument in favor of continuing the course with Heinicke. Rivera’s comments on Tuesday should shed some light on whether commanders agree.
