Texas A&M wide receiver Inias Smith will miss the remainder of the 2022 season due to an injury he sustained during the team’s win over Arkansas on Saturday night.
Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher confirmed the news on Monday and said Smith had a “lower body injury.” Maurice Smith, father of Inias, said The Bryan-College Station Eagle that his son had a fracture in his right tibia.
Arkansas linebacker Bumper Pool passed Smith in the second half. Smith blocked quarterback Max Johnson’s run and Poole rolled over Johnson as he made a tackle and accidentally fell on Smith’s right foot.
Smith was unable to hold his leg when Texas A&M medical staff helped him off the field and he did not return to play.
Smith has led A&M in receipts for the past 2 seasons.
Smith’s loss is huge for an A&M passing game that has struggled to get past the first four games of the season. Smith has been Aggie’s top receiver in each of the last two seasons and has 15 rushes for 291 yards and two goals in 2022.
Smith had 47 catches for 509 yards and six TDs in 2021 and served as a multi-purpose weapon in 2020. He had 43 catches for 564 yards and six points and rushed 49 times for 293 yards and four goals as the Aggies went 9-1. and beat North Carolina in the Orange Bowl.
A&M opened the season with Haynes King as the team’s starting QB but switched after losing to Appalachian State in Week 2. LSU transfer Max Johnson took over before the team’s Week 3 game against Miami and Aggie beat both the Hurricanes and Arkansas. with Johnson as the team’s chief signal operator.
Aside from Smith, Evan Stewart is the only player on the A&M roster to have over nine catches in 2022. Stewart has 13 catches for 141 yards and is also the only other player on the list to have over 100 receiving yards.
