According to the Big 33 website:
The Big 33 Football Classic began in 1957 and is still regarded as one of the best high school All-Star football games in the United States.
Currently in the Big 33 Classic, the best players from Pennsylvania go head-to-head with 33 of the best players from Maryland. The Big 33 Classic has long been known as the “Super High School Football Bowl”.
Many of the players who participated in this game were recruited to Division 1 colleges and universities, and many of them progressed to the next level where they achieved a high level of success. Notable former NFL players include Kyle Brady, John Cappelletti, Kerry Collins, Sean Gilbert, Marvin Harrison, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Joe Namath, Ricky Watters, Ed McCaffrey, Larry Johnson, and Steve Slaton. A little. There are countless others who have taken it to the next level.
There has never been a Super Bowl without Big 33 alumni. BIG 33 is proud to say that at least one former BIG 33 player has appeared in every Super Bowl game ever played. This in itself indicates the quality of the players who participate in the annual event.
Big 33 promotes quality coaching and works closely with the Pennsylvania High School Football Coaches Association (PSFCA) and Ohio (OSFCA). Coaches are making a difference both on and off the field, making a big impact on our youth. A perfect example is 1961 Big 33 alumnus and 2007 chairman emeritus Marty Schottenheimer. He credits his high school football coach for much of the success he had at the University of Pittsburgh and as head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins, and San Diego Chargers.
“Much more than just a football game,” The Big 33 Football Classic promotes student and community excellence by bringing players, cheerleaders, All-Star members, buddies, host families, and fellows to a plethora of activities during Game Week.
