The Portuguese Circuit portimao it was the scene of the door in scene of the car that will try return the Le Mans crown to the French manufacturer. The last time that Peugeot prevailed in the queen test of resistance was the year 2009, with a certain Marc Gené at the wheel (which inaugurated the winners of Spanish motorsports in the mythical test). Of course, the reconquest will not be in this 2022 season, but will have to wait for the centenary year as the 9×8 will premiere at the 6 Hours of Monza in July.

That was the great unknown, the competitive start of the 9×8 (although MARCA already anticipated that it was the most plausible option a month ago)… along with the name of the sixth pilotwhich will replace the Danish Kevin Magnussenwho left the program to re-enlist with the Haas Formula 1 team. There were no surprises here either as he will be Peugeot’s reserve, James Rossiterwho will take his place in the starting lineup.

The Peugeot 9X8 will equip a hybrid undercarriage of 670 horseswith a V6 gasoline engine 500 kW (680) supported by other electric located on the front axle of 200 kW (272 hp) which, therefore, will have all wheel drive. A technical setup similar to that of the Toyota GR010 Hybrid… but with a distinctly different appearance.

Peugeot, focused on the project

For this very special moment, the entire Peugeot structure was present at the baptism of the 9X8, from its CEO, the British Linda Jacksonas the head of competition for the Stellantis group, Jean-Marc Finotwho was especially proud of one fact: “The car has been entirely designed by Peugeot Sport and that was one of the objectives set from the beginning”. TotalEnergies has developed the batteries (through Saft) and Marelli the hybrid part.

Jackson – who was in charge of officially unveiling the appointment in which the car will debut – emphasized the challenge posed for Peugeot Sport, which is its most characteristic feature: “When we teach people said that without a rear spoiler it would not be possible, and there it is, without a piece that has been used since 1965, I seem to remember. It is a display of the people skills of Peugeot as a brand,” he stressed.

“It’s a very exciting moment to finally hear the car and really see it on track. it’s more impressive than i thought“, assured Jackson, who was “impatient” to see him run. “We have pressure due to the expectation generated and it’s time to restore confidence on the track”. In July we will know its true potential against the rest of LM Hypercar, and we will know if it is in a position to compete with the Toyota that has dominated the resistance in recent years.
