The first-ever MLB Draft Lottery will take place at the Winter Meetings tonight, so we’ll find out the top order for the 2023 MLB Draft, which will take place in July at the All-Star Party in Seattle.

Tuesday night’s lottery will determine the top six picks in the draft, and the Washington Nationals, Oakland Athletics and Pittsburgh Pirates, who have lost 100 or more games, have the best chance of 16.5% of getting the top pick.

At this early stage in the draft, it’s hard to stay at the top of the draft – a clear favorite who looks stupid in retrospect, or a player who has an unexpected jump in ability, or an injury-riddled season.

That’s why I’m looking at the field by tiers: most of the conversations I’ve had have identified a group of consensus leaders and then a few likely contenders if things go wrong this spring. (All spring, you’ll be able to watch almost all of the top college players on Sportzshala+, as they’re focused on the SEC!)
