The 2022 FIFA World Cup features 32 countries competing in the biggest football event in Qatar, the first World Cup ever held in the Middle East. This year marks the final edition of the 32-country tournament, a number set to rise to 48 in time for the 2026 World Cup in the US, Mexico and Canada.

This year’s Copa Mundial looks different for several reasons, including the dates (due to the intense summer heat in Qatar, the schedule has been moved to November-December instead of the traditional DST). But as always, the event features the world’s top football nations competing for global glory, as well as individual awards for top players, including the coveted prize for attacking players: the Golden Boot.

In the latest iteration of the World Cup, England Harry Kane, also star of Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, took home the award thanks to his six goals that likely helped soften the blow of three lions who lost 2-0 to Belgium in the third-place match. One of the main storylines of this year’s World Cup is the swan song of two of the game’s greatest stars: the Argentina national team. Lionel Messi and Portugal Cristiano Ronaldo. None of the players have ever won the Golden Boot and none of their teams have won a World Cup during their tenure. The reigning French champions are likely to field some contenders for the award, including Kylian Mbappe as well as Olivier Giroud. What is the Golden Boot?

The Golden Boot is an award given to the top scorer of each World Cup. If, at the end of the tournament, two or more players are tied at the top of the list with the same number of goals, the award will go to the player who scored the most goals without a penalty, and if they are still tied, then go to the player with the most assists. While the tournament has always had a top scorer, the specific award has been presented since 1982. It was known as “The Golden Show” until it was renamed in 2010.
