Friendswood (TX) High Top247 Edge Rusher Breylan Shelby announced his commitment to USC on Saturday afternoon during a live broadcast on the 247Sports YouTube channel. He chose to play for the Trojans over another finalist from Texas.
Shelby ranks 15th as head coach Lincoln Riley and Trojans in the recruitment class of 2023.
“Indeed, when I went on an official visit, I saw all the legends that came out,” Shelby said. “They talked to me about what the community has done for them, what Los Angeles has done for them. The places they’ve been to and what they have to do just because they played in LA. They talked about the benefits and the benefits of SC education. How SC as a whole is great for everyone.”
It was the right choice for Shelby at 6’4 1/2, 235 pounds, who is ranked 15th winger in the country and 133rd prospect overall by the 247Sports Composite. Shelby received about 40 offers during his process, but no program proved harder for him, building a relationship with Riley, his lead recruiter. Roy Manning and defense coordinator Alex Grinch.
“You can tell how much Coach Manning really wanted to train me,” Shelby said. “His persistence, his knowledge and the future he has planned for me is breathtaking. Constant effort, and if I go and work, I can get to where I want to and make my dreams come true.
“When I first spoke to Coach Riley, he made you feel almost like his baby. You feel at home and you feel welcome when you walk in.”
Shelby believes he has the opportunity to make a big impact in his freshman year and has felt at home with the players in the locker room as well as other recruits.
“It’s really a culture,” Shelby said. “I really feel what they have going on. You have a feeling of being at home. A sense of culture when it comes to SC and how they’re going to change the program.”
