Trade: Louis Cardinals acquire LHP Jordan Montgomery from New York Yankees for CF Harrison Bader.
This one slipped right before the deadline, and it’s an unusual deadline deal – one major league player for another major league player, as opposed to prospects. The Cardinals acquired Jose Quintana from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, and now the Cards have added a second southpaw to fill a rotation desperately in need of depth due to injuries to Jack Flaherty and Steven Matz.
There’s nothing flashy about Montgomery throwing a lead at 93 miles an hour. But he has a five-field arsenal, and in three full, healthy seasons with the Yankees in 2017, 2021, and 2022, he has amassed 3.88, 3.83, and 3.69 ERAs—solid, consistent numbers in the American League East. . What’s interesting about him is that while his strike rate is only in the 38th percentile, his swing and miss rate is in the 76th percentile, and his change and curve record blow rates above 40%. Basically, he’s your classic old-school southpaw who turns the Earthlings on and keeps you in the game.
