Trade: Sailors purchase RHP Luis Castillo from Reds for SS Noelvi Marte, SS Edwin Arroyo, RHP Levi Stoudt and RHP Andrew Moore.
When the Mariners are in wild-card position and looking to end an epic playoff drought that dates back to the Stone Age (at least in the sporting years) of 2001, you knew GM Jerry Dipoto was about to make a move – and possibly large. He did not disappoint. The Mariners were thought to be one of the top contenders to acquire Juan Soto, but Dipoto instead bought Castillo, who was considered the best starting pitcher (with the exception of Shohei Otani’s shocking trade) and outplayed teams such as the Yankees, Dodgers and “Cardinals”. also pursued Castillo in hot pursuit.
Let’s move on to ratings.
The Mariners are 17-5 in their last 22 games to make the playoffs, but all five of those losses have come to the Astros since the All-Star break, with the Mariners only scoring 11 points in those losses. So that’s why they were in Soto; they need to improve the offense, which ranks 11th in the American League in runs per game. But they’re facing a different problem: Rookie George Kirby is approaching the innings limit of 94 innings on the season after just 67.2 in 2021 in his first full season as a pro. Without a viable #5 starter, they really needed another starter to eventually replace Kirby in the rotation.
