If the 49ers are going to make the playoffs this season, they’ll do it with a rookie quarterback. Brock Purdy. It may seem unlikely, but the 49ers left the tackle Trent Williams says that Purdy is no ordinary newcomer.

Williams told NFL Media that Purdy has already established himself as a dressing room leader and that the rest of the team is backing him.

“You’d think he’s been in the league for 15 years,” Williams said. “If you talk, he’ll say, ‘Shut up. He is not a timid newcomer feeling the road. He’ll get in your ass. You might think he looks like Peyton Manning or something. Wide receivers don’t work, you’ll hear him scold the wide receiver.

Williams said that Purdy immediately commanded the crowd when Jimmy Garoppolo was injured and had to retire in Sunday’s victory over the Dolphins.

“You go into a game against one of the best teams in the league and everyone is looking to feed on you,” Williams said. “If you walk in and don’t look confident and seem very indecisive, then everyone else starts to freak out and act indecisive. When you show up and act like you know what you’re doing and look like you know what you’re doing, everyone will assume you know what you’re doing.”

Next for the 49ers is Tom Brady and buccaneers. Purdy vs. Brady isn’t quite on the same level as Manning vs. Brady, but Williams believes the 49ers have an experienced quarterback leading them in a big game between the NFC division leaders.
