The NCAA cleared Kanka to join UCLA after he recently played for Lokomotiv Kuban, a professional team from Russia. In the Russian Super League, he averaged 10.9 points and 3.7 rebounds. The striker also played for the Italian national team in different age categories.

Janka averaged 9.4 points and 2.1 rebounds for Italy at the European Under-20 Championship last month.

“We’re thrilled to have Abramo in our program this season,” said Bruins coach Mick Cronin. “Playing in Europe, Abramo is a versatile player who can shoot, hit and pass. At 6ft 7in, we love his size and his defensive ability, especially his height and athleticism.”

Kanka joins a new class of freshman quarterbacks Dylan Andrews, Amari Bailey and Jack Seidler, as well as forwards Adem Bonet and Evan Manjikian.
