UConn star Azzi Fudd to return this season after knee injury: ‘She started looking like her old self’
Azzie Fudd will return to the court this season.
UConn coach Geno Auriemma said Friday ahead of the Big East that Fudd was partially involved in Thursday’s practice and she intends to play again this season for the Huskies. Fudd has not played since mid-January and suffered from a knee injury for much of the season.
“She’s become more like her old self,” Oriemma said via Lila Bromberg of the Hartford Courant.
Fudd injured her knee for the first time since colliding with a teammate in December. She missed eight games but then made a brief comeback in January before injuring her knee again in the Huskies’ game against Georgetown in her second game back. Fudd has not played since.
This season, the sophomore averaged 17.9 points and 2.2 assists in nine games at UCLA. Her injury was one of several major injuries the Huskies have dealt with this season. Star Paige Buekers tore her cruciate ligament and forward Ice Brady sprained his patellar tendon, both of which knocked them out for the season.
Despite the injuries, UConn finished the season 26-5 and captured the Big East regular season title. The Huskies will start the conference tournament on Saturday against Georgetown, who beat Butler in the first round on Friday at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.
It is unknown if Fudd will be able to join UConn in the Big East tournament or if she will have to wait until the NCAA tournament to return.
“She is capable of more, and she continues to push herself to become better… Let’s see what happens today in practice,” said Auriemma. via UCTV.
