Four fights and over hours spent together in a cage, but Brandon Moreno finally closed the door on his rivalry with Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 283.

The fight ended after Moreno landed a nasty punch midway through the third round that left Figueiredo with significant swelling and a cut near his eye. After the horn blew in the most dominant round of the fight, Figueiredo returned to his corner, where the doctor examined his eye and declared that he should not be allowed to continue the fight.

With that, the co-main event came to an end with Moreno celebrating his second victory over Figueiredo and also cementing his title as the best flyweight in the UFC.

“It’s very hard for me,” Moreno said later. “People need to understand, I’m just trying to get food for my family, that’s all. I tried to be very, very smart. In the last one, I was so emotional.”

With so much time spent together in the cage, Figueiredo and Moreno both showed patience with punches to the legs. Moreno ended up landing a couple of surprise takedowns, but he also had to parry a couple of submission attempts as Figueiredo was looking for a guillotine early and then a heel hook late in the first round.

While Moreno showed off his wrestling, he actually landed the best combinations on his feet with a significant advantage in the punches landed. However, Figueiredo’s ability to use force constantly made Moreno remain cautious when exchanging punches with the Brazilian.

Late in the second round, Moreno ducked for another takedown, but Figueiredo quickly countered with a guillotine choke attempt. The serve looked stiff for a moment, but Moreno eventually freed himself and that left him at the top where he retained control of Figueiredo and also brought down some punches and elbows.

With so many equal exchanges on his feet, Moreno was looking for the perfect opening and that’s when he landed a powerful left hand that hit Figueiredo right in the eye. Once the shot was fired, Figueiredo complained that he was poked in the eye, but replays showed it was a punch and a knuckle that landed flush and caused damage.

From there, Moreno took over the dominant ground and pound attack until the horn blew to end the round. Once Figueiredo had retired to his corner, attempts were made to help the cut and reduce the swelling, but it was clear that the Brazilian’s eye was completely closed.

It didn’t take long for the Doctor to look into Figueiredo’s eyes to realize that it simply wasn’t safe to let him continue. The fight was stopped, and although Figueiredo clearly did not want such an outcome, he accepted the defeat and also announced his withdrawal from the flyweight division.

“Unfortunately, it’s time to leave this division,” Figueiredo said. “Congratulations to Brandon, but I’m getting up. It was Brandon’s night. I thought it was eye gouging. I hope that I won’t have long term problems with my eyes. I’m tired of gaining this weight, so I’m lifting.”

With Moreno’s win and Figueiredo declaring his 125-pound days are over, one of the greatest rivalries in UFC history is coming to an end. Moreno also now sits at the top of the flyweight division with a long list of contenders who are just looking forward to the chance to finally compete for UFC gold.
