UFC 285 live results: Highlights, updates, analysis for entire fight card including Jon Jones-Ciryl Gane
The return of one of the most talented fighters in UFC history will take place Saturday night at UFC 285 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Jon Jones vs. Cyril Gein is the main event of the pay-per-view card, which also features a fight for the women’s flyweight championship between Valentina Shevchenko and Alexa Grasso.
Jones, longtime UFC light heavyweight champion, returns to the Octagon after 37 months to fight for the vacant UFC heavyweight title, which was stripped from Francis Ngannou when he was unable to negotiate a new contract with the UFC. Jones has never fought someone as big and athletic as Gein, the former interim champion. However, Jones is the -185 BetMGM favorite to take down Gein and win the second weight title. Gain is approaching +155.
Considered by many to be the greatest MMA fighter of all time, Jones has not fought since defeating Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 on February 8, 2020 in Houston. Gein is one of the greatest all-rounders in the UFC. He is fit, fast, explosive and causes many problems for his opponents. He’s not a one-dimensional guy who relies on a lot of power. In his last fight in September, Ghane knocked out Tai Tuivasa in Paris.
UFC 285: Jones-Gane picks, predictions
Kevin Wrath: I like Gein’s game in general, especially his footwork, but whenever I’m leaning towards picking him, I remember this: Francis Ngannou outplayed him. Ngannou was a powerful striker, but nowhere near as much of a fighter as Jones.
So when things go wrong, I look for Jones to come to his fight. I will play with Jones to win here and bet -185. I also like distance wrestling, which is -120 at BetMGM.
Mark Drumheller: I support Jones because the versatility of his punches will unbalance Gein enough to allow him to take the fight to the mat when needed. Jones is not a powerful puncher, but he has always excelled at maximizing his length and he will still have a three inch advantage over Gein. He has good knees in the clinch and deadly elbows that can change the nature of a fight in seconds. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a big dose of his slanting leg kicks early on to break Gein’s timing while Jones finds his range. Jones has landed over 40 kicks in two of his last three fights and will use his legs to help him cover the distance. Once inside, he can tie up Gein, unload him with his elbows, or trip and trip him, nullifying Gein’s insult by laying him on his back.
