UFC Fight Night results, highlights: Cory Sandhagen bloodies Song Yadong, forces TKO after nasty cut

Son Yadong showed indomitable will but took too much damage in the main event of UFC Fight Night against Corey Sandhagen. A cut over Song’s left eye opened in round 2 and got worse as the fight dragged on at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas before Herb Dean finally brushed it off after round 4.

Song performed well early on, possibly landing stronger punches in the first round and swaying his high-ranking opponent in the second round. Sandhagen executed the strategic game plan. He struggled early and often, disrupting Song’s rhythm and diverting his attention. An early commitment to wrestling opened up Sandhagen’s flamboyant play as the fight progressed.

It was a clever upward elbow strike that for the second time opened a terrible wound above Sun’s left eye. A worried ringside doctor checked the cut after the second and third shots, but allowed Song to continue. The wound widened in the 4th round and Sun’s left eye began to swell. The doctor informed Dean that he was uncomfortable with Song’s injuries, causing Dean to pull out of the fight before the final round began.

“I hate that it all ended like this. He deserved the fifth round,” Sandhagen said after the fight. “I stripped the guy of his power. He’s a hell of a striker.”

Sandhagen suggested returning to competition around Christmas and named Marlon Vera or Merab Dvalishvili as potential opponents. He also mentioned fighting four lightweights competing at UFC 280: Sean O’Malley, Aljamain Sterling, T.J. Dillashaw and Petr Yan.

Sandhagen (15-4) won his first fight in 19 months since losing to Jan and Dillashaw – the first straight loss of his professional career. Song (19-7-1, 1 NC) ended a three-fight winning streak built on victories over Marlon Moraes, Julio Arce and Casey Kenny.
