LAS VEGAS – When he started his UFC tenure with five straight wins, August Sakai was on the cusp of heavyweight glory.
Then in September 2020, he faced a buzz saw in Alistair Overeem and had his momentum stalled by a fifth-round TKO loss. In mid-2021, he was knocked out by Jairzinho Rozenstruik and got into a skid for the first time. And later that year, Tai Tuivasa knocked him out in the second round.
With three failures in a row, Sakai (15-4-1 MMA, 4-3 UFC) appears desperate for a win when he takes on Sergei Spivats (14-3 MMA, 5-3 UFC) at UFC on Saturday ESPN 40 takes the main card of the UFC Apex tournament in Las Vegas. The map airs on ESPN and airs on ESPN+.
However, Sakai said at Wednesday’s press day that he had made major changes to his fight preparation ahead of the Spivak fight. Will they be the one to put him above everyone else to break his skid?
