Gregg Berhalter has some big decisions to make, especially if he can get Brenden Aaronsohn and Gio Reyna into the starting XI without impacting his team’s balance sheet.

It also depends a lot on the USMNT approach as they can sit back and watch how to counter England or maybe they go all out with the high pressing that worked so well in the first half against Wales. However they line up, the USMNT will want more control throughout the game as they lost heavily in their draw against Wales.

Below is the proposed USMNT v England lineup.

Predicted USMNT lineup vs England

—— Turner ——

— Dest — Zimmerman — Ream — Robinson —

— Adams — McKenny —

—— Reina ——

— Weah — Wright — Pulisic —

Analysis, options and tactics

The four defenders and the goalkeeper are self-selected, although after his costly mistake against Wales, perhaps Walker Zimmerman can come out and Cameron Carter-Vickers can start? Also, Sergino Dest should start at right back, but he looked very rusty from a recent injury and Berhalter may be worried that Raheem Sterling will turn on him on the counterattack.

There is one big decision to be made in midfield: will the Mousa-Adams-McKenney trio start again? Adams will definitely be, but if Berhalter wants a more attacking lineup, he should probably rule out one of Musach or McKenny. I probably wouldn’t include Musa as he struggled a bit against Wales, but McKenny could easily be left out as he too struggled and is obviously fighting for a return to full form.

If Berhalter does opt for a more attacking midfield then one of Aaronsson and Reina will start at number 10. I would probably pick Reina given his ability to keep the ball which will be key against England. The Dortmund youngster was obviously unhappy about not playing against Wales as he told reporters he was 100 per cent ready, but Berhalter wanted to use Jordan Morris from the bench in front of him. It is likely that Berhalter saved Reyna from any potential injury as Wales was extremely physically fit. Aaronsson could easily start wide in this match, but I expect him to be a really good substitute in the second half.

Upstairs, I would invite Hadji Wright instead of Josh Sargent. He would have given the USMNT a focus at the top, and while Josh Sargent had a good USA goal against Wales, the ball didn’t really get stuck at his top. Wright will allow the US to move further down the field and relieve some of the pressure as England are expected to have a lot of the ball and the US will play in a 4-5-1 for most of this game.
