Having reached the final of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship thanks to a 3-0 semi-final victory over hosts Honduras, the USMNT youth team has now secured a place at the Olympics in two years to qualify for the U20. World Cup 2023.

The US faced a surprise package from the Dominican Republic in Sunday’s final after they beat Guatemala (who eliminated Mexico in the quarter-finals) on penalties in the other semi-final to claim their place in the Olympics and they also qualified for the 2023 U20 World Cup. both are their first FIFA events as a football nation.

As for the USMNT, they can now look forward to returning to the Olympics and having another big tournament experience ahead of the 2026 World Cup on home soil.

Who can play at the 2024 Olympics?

The 2024 Men’s Olympic Football Tournament is an U-23 competition (players must be born on or after January 1, 2001 to qualify) that will take place from July 24 to August 10 in France.

Teams can have three players with age. The competition will feature 16 teams as host France, along with the USMNT and the Dominican Republic, will become the first three teams to qualify for the tournament.

That sound, which you can already hear, is chatter about whether players like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKenny and other senior team stars will play as overweight players in 2024.

How did the USMNT get to Paris?

Focusing on what’s happening here and now, USA Under-20 head coach Michael Anthony Varas hailed his young team for their “courage” and “relentlessness”, demonstrating his pride in changing the bad history of failed attempts to reach any of the past three Olympic Games.

Paxten Aaronsohn (Brendan’s younger brother) started the USMNT perfectly by scoring just over two minutes, then Alejandro Alvarado made it 2-0 and Quinn Sullivan added a third before half time as the US was in cruise control.

The hosts of Honduras fought with all their might, but could not answer for the final third place of the young Americans.
