USMNT World Cup player ratings vs. Wales: Tyler Adams stands out as Walker Zimmerman’s error costs USA

The US men’s team on Monday showed a far from stable game in the first match of the World Cup, drawing with Wales 1:1. The Americans looked great in the first half despite not creating many chances when Tim Weah scored, but things were very different in the second half as Wales took control and put Gregg Berhalter’s team on the ropes and Gareth Bale scored a penalty. Of course, this came after the biggest mistake of the game, when Walker Zimmerman needlessly cut down an LAFC player in the box, forfeiting a game-changing penalty.

But how did he and all the other Americans play? Here are our player ratings:

The Arsenal goalkeeper had absolutely nothing to do in the first half and probably didn’t even break a sweat. In the second, he made a fantastic save from Ben Davis in the 64th minute. Couldn’t do anything with the penalty, but had a hand in the missile attack.

Got an early yellow card but it was tough. On the ball, his touch was weak at times, but for the most part he was firm. There were moments when his defensive position was in doubt.

Sturdy and reliable, at least in the air, clearing a few dangerous balls out of the box that could cause a lot of trouble. On earth it was a different story. His foul on Gareth Bale for refusing a penalty was reckless and unexpected. He immediately realized that he had made a serious mistake.

Got along with Bale early, looking strong in the air and he was always collected. Maintained quality positioning at the end of the game and certainly earned more minutes. But don’t be surprised if he doesn’t play against England as he has a yellow card.

Really bright spot. Strong when playing the ball forward. He moved well, interacted well with teammates and helped create chances. He returned the ball well and always looked prepared.

The best player on the field. The captain was cool and collected. He always played smart, checking the ball, teaching others and setting an example. He had a late tackle at Bale that was quite impressive. He is the heart and soul of this team.
