Utah Jazz hiring Will Hardy, 34, as youngest active head coach in NBA

The Utah Jazz and Will Hardy are finalizing a deal to become the team’s next head coach, a person familiar with the talks confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.

The man asked for anonymity because he was not allowed to speak publicly until the deal was made official. The Jazz are also hiring former NBA coach David Fizdale as an assistant general manager.

Hardy became Utah’s first major employee since Danny Ainge, a former Boston Celtics player and front office executive, became the franchise’s CEO in December.

Hardy, 34, was an assistant coach in Boston last season, hired from the San Antonio Spurs by Celtics freshman coach Ime Udoka.

He will become the youngest current coach in the league and another member of Gregg Popovich’s coaching tree. Recently departed jazz coach Quin Snyder was also from the Spurs staff, as was Udoka.

Hardy spent 11 seasons with San Antonio, first as a trainee, then as an assistant video coordinator, then as a lead video coordinator, and finally as an assistant coach.

Fizdale was an assistant with the Miami Heat, where he coached Dwyane Wade, now part owner of the Jazz. Fizdale also served as head coach for the Memphis Grizzlies and the New York Knicks.

The Jazz led 49–33 last season and lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs.
