This week UTSA swingman DJ Richards I went to the NCAA transfer portal. Cypress, Texas guard Richards, who is 6-foot-5, has averaged 10.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game for the Roadrunners this season.
“It was very busy,” Richards said of his experience with the portal. “It was cool and I imagined such a set after graduating from high school, but Covid was here. However, now the coaches could see everything.”
Since entering the portal Georgia Institute of Technology, McNeese State, Richmond, Ole Miss, San Francisco, SMU, Texas A&M, Tulsa, TCU, Wyomingand other mid-level programs.
Discussing what he’s looking for from his next destination, Richards says, “I want something that gets me to the next step, and a program that wants to win.”
Known for his shooting prowess and large positional size, Richards is a real threat that can flare up from behind the arc at any moment. In addition, he has the tools to be an asset on defense and hits the floor every time with a confident approach to the game.
He says he’s excited to bring a competitive edge and some aggressive points to his next school.
After the first season, Richards had three years of eligibility left. For his efforts this season, he was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team.
