Last Saturday at UFC 284 in Perth, Australia, a rare moment in MMA history took place.
In the main event, the man considered the No. 1 weight class fighter on most lists moved up in the division to compete for a second weight class belt – against a man many had at No. 2.
In the internal rankings of the UFC, there was a featherweight champion. Alexander Volkanovskiy (25-2 MMA, 12-1 UFC) #1 weight class fighter. Right behind him in second place on the UFC list was the lightweight champion. Islam Makhachev (24-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC). (MMA Junkie Ranking going into the fight, Volkanovskiy is #1 and Makhachev is #9, although this applies to all promotions, not just the UFC.)
Volkanovski failed and Makhachev won by unanimous decision, but there are people who thought Volkanovski won the fight. But with this victory, Makhachev became the new No. 1 fighter in the world, regardless of the weight category?
That’s the question we asked this week of Brian “Gose” Garcia, Nolan King, and Dan Tom’s “Rotating Cabal” group. They dealt with the host of “Magnificent” George Garcia.
Check out their discussion in the video above, and don’t miss this week’s full episode below.
