Wanderlei Silva loses bid to join Brazilian congress

Wanderlei Silva is now 0 out of 2 in his bid to earn a seat in the Brazilian Congress after failing Brazil’s 2022 elections on Sunday.

The former PRIDE champion, who recently announced his retirement from MMA, was a member of the Progressive Party (PP), which supports far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, and received 13,907 votes in the election.

Silva, who received 154 votes more than his 2018 campaign with the Social Democratic Party (PSD), will need more than 61,500 votes to win a congressional seat in his home state of Paraná.

During his political campaign, Silva called himself “a patriot who always [fights] for Freedom,” promising to “bring dignity to our sport and work so that it becomes a strong tool for social inclusion.”

With a record of 35-14-1 and 1 no competition as a professional MMA fighter under the UFC, PRIDE and Bellator banners, as well as other MMA promotions, Silva has left the door open to compete in boxing in the future.
