Asdrubal Cabrera, a two-time All-Star and veteran of 15 major league seasons, made headlines on Saturday for the wrong reasons by provoking a brawl during a Venezuelan Winter League match between his Caribes de Anzoategui and Tiburones de La Guaira.
Cabrera reacted poorly to Carlos Castro’s home run celebration when he turned to Caribes’ dugout and said something that caused several players to walk out or jump onto the field. However, Cabrera escalated the situation unnecessarily by hitting Castro as he rounded first base.
Here is video evidence of the whole mess:
Following this, former major league pitcher Calvin Escobar took to Twitter to express his frustration with Cabrera. Escobar tweeted the following message in Spanish.: “Asdrubal Cabrera, you’ve gone too far, brother… don’t you see all the stupid things that Astudillo does.” (Willians Astudillo is Cabrera’s teammate.)
Cabrera wasn’t the only former major league player to misbehave during the brawl. Former Philadelphia Phillies reliever (and current Tiburones member) Edubari Ramos was caught on camera throwing a baseball that hit Liarvis Breto (Cabrera’s team pitcher) in the face. Again, here’s the video:
This aggression is worse than Asdrubal Cabrera’s because Edrubray Ramos is the pitcher, he treacherously shoots Liarvis Breto in the face, which is also a cowardly and criminal act. hope @LVBP_Official dictate exemplary sanctions so that these types of cowardly aggression do not happen again https://t.co/9VMtj3grVa

Cabrera played on eight teams during his time in the majors, spending part of eight seasons with Cleveland. He last appeared in 2021 with both the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Cincinnati Reds. It’s probably fair to write that his major league career ended regardless of this act, but it remains to be seen how much action he missed due to his botched shot.
