After hitting the par-5 14 tee into the hospitality zone, US Open leader M.J. Duffy decided it was better to play on artificial turf than on luscious rough.

Passing the fans, railings and overhanging tree, Duffy went 284 yards through the fairway woods, his ball hitting to the left of the putting surface.

Seemingly having done the difficult part, Duffy then slaughtered the easier task. The 33-year-old South African hit his chip shot and then again, his ball rolled 9 feet into the hole. He missed the doubles and made a bogey 6.

With four birds over his first nine holes on Friday at The Country Club, Duffew took the lead with three shots, 6 under par. Ghost on the 11th cut his lead to two and he went up one from the 14th green. Another roll in 15th completely erased his direct advantage. At 3 under par, he shared first place with four others who played from day one into the afternoon.
