Xander Schaufele started his Sunday at The American Express at the age of 15, but he quickly moved up the leaderboard to fifth on par-5.

After four consecutive pars opening his final round, the reigning Olympic gold medalist posted a 314-yard drive down the fairway in fifth. He had 226 yards to go and needed to carry most of that yard to clear the pond guarding the front of the green on par 5.

The difference between a hero and zero in golf is often small, as was the case on Sunday at PGA West.

Schaufele narrowly missed what could have been a disaster by landing at the leading edge of the green and rolling into the hole as if his shot had been hit by a club.

It was the first double eagle on the PGA Tour in 2023 and moved Schauffele, who had to pull out of the Sentry Tournament of Champions with a back injury two weeks ago, to an under-18 week, but he didn’t stop there.

The San Diego State alumnus made five consecutive birdies starting at par 8 and added two more in 14th.th and 16th. The result was 10 under 62 to finish under 25 in a week.

While a magical Sunday wasn’t enough to come out on top, Schauffele has some positive momentum heading into the Farmers Insurance Open next week.
