Weekly rankings notes: A dozen noteworthy updates in the 2023 and 2024 classes

Ascending from previous high three-star status to a four-star 90 grade on 247Sports is Daniel Harris, a traits-laden 2023 cornerback prospect from Gulliver Prep in Miami. Not only has Harris been impressed in live exposure this semester, but we recently got reliable measurements on him as well. Those put Harris at 6-foot-2, 174 pounds with a 6-foot-5 wingspan, which speaks to his length and ability to crowd catch windows and disrupt at the catch point. Harris also has some excellent multi-sport data in his back pocket from Spring 2021, when he ran multiple sub-11.00-second 100-meter times and sub-22.00-second 200-meter times, including a 10.74 PR and a 21.61 PR, respectively.

Cordele (Ga.) Crisp County features a ton of talent, especially relative to its classification (AAA). Ahmad Brown, a 2023 two-way playmaker, is a headliner for Crisp County, where he plays receiver, quarterback, and defensive back, in addition to participating in basketball and track and field. Brown, who ascends from an 85 to a high three-star 88posted an encouraging 11.09 100 this spring, which also featured three other 100-meter times in the fast half of the 11.00-second range.

Brown averaged 8.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game in hoops after his strong junior season on the gridiron. Brown finished Fall 2021 with 27 catches for 541 yards and six touchdowns; 276 rushing yards and nine TDs on 6.73 yards per carry; and 149 yards and one TD on 17-for-32 passing. He also recorded 25 tackles and three interceptions from the secondary. Over the last two seasons, he’s compiled 2,500-plus total yards of offense, including 1,000 passing as a sophomore. Brown has scheduled June official visits for Vanderbilt and South Carolina and has added numerous offers in recent weeks.

The Deep South provides countless high-major prospects across the positional spectrum who seem to pop up out of nowhere with time, but especially along the line of scrimmage. Tavion Gadson from Savannah (Ga.) Jenkins represents the latest of such prospect. While his size is not yet verified, Gadson is believed to reside in the 6-foot-5, 265-pound range and assembled an encouraging junior season along Jenkins’ defensive front.

Gadson- an initial high three-star 88 — finished 2021 with 60 tackles, six sacks, and three forced fumbles, plus some limited snaps at tight end (one catch for 15 yards). Basketball adds some multi-sport context to Gadson’s profile. A big-bodied fluid mover, Gadson — who averaged 4.3 points and 6.5 rebounds this year — should present plenty of developmental upside over the next few years.

Gilmer (Texas) Rohan Fluellen moves up from 87 to 88 in the high three-star range thanks in part to his impressive 10.94-second 100-meter time this spring. That came after his monstrous junior season this past fall, when he caught 88 passes for 1,420 yards and 11 touchdowns and posted 38 tackles, eight interceptions (one returned for a TD), and four pass breakups on defense.

Fluellen, who has helped Gilmer to consecutive Texas Class 4A Division II state championship game appearances, also provides a playmaking basketball presence for Gilmer, who employed him as the third leg of its Texas 4A sixth-place 4×200 relay team as a sophomore in May 2021. Designated as an athlete, Fluellen — a TCU pledge — could play either way in college thanks to his combination of athleticism, ball skills, and physical makeup.

Melissa (Texas) offensive tackle Trevor Goosby moves up from 86 to a high three-star 88 rating thanks to recent exposure live and verified data that suggests a high developmental ceiling. Goosby, another TCU pledge, hits the oft-claimed, yet typically not verifiable 6-foot-6 threshold. Not only is he a legitimate 6-6, but the 275-pounder owns plus length with a wingspan at 6-10.

Furthermore, Goosby’s movement ability provides encouraging context to his functional athleticism, which should only improve as he continues to develop, and his natural feel for pass protection is promising as well. A verified shuttle time in the 4.7 range provides further strong evidence that Goosby owns some high-upside traits as an offensive tackle prospect.

Hailing from Jasper (Texas), Tyanthon Smith caught our eye following his sophomore season in Fall 2021 and college programs have also taken notice. While the verified information lacks at this point in the evaluation process, Smith’s tape shows clear functional athleticism with the potential to stay on the field in all down-and-distance situations as a back-seven defender. He displays impressive pursuit range and closing burst, as well as the spatial fluidity to match up with backs and tight ends as needed.

Smith, who debuts as a high three-star 88, could become one of the most heavily recruited linebacker prospects in the TXHSFB 2024 class. He’s reported his first five offers from Baylor, Oregon State, Texas Tech, SMU, and UTSA. His 2021 campaign featured 99 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, three sacks, an interception, and five pass breakups, plus limited but valuable short-yardage touches in the backfield.

Mesquite (Texas) North Mesquite 2024 receiver Elijah Baesa debuts as a high three-star 88 on 247Sports thanks to his promising sophomore tape and some added track and field context this spring. Baesa possesses a long, lean frame in the 6-foot, 170-pound range that fosters his long-striding, open-field speed, which he flashed last fall in the vertical passing game and return game.

Baesa posted a 22.79-second 200-meter time this spring and also long jumped 19 feet, 4 inches in limited chances. Those numbers followed a freshman year 11.59 100 in Spring 2021. Baesa finished his sophomore year with 14 catches for 249 yards and four touchdowns as he averaged almost 18 yards per catch. Not only is his run-after-catch ability intriguing, he’s shown go-get-it athleticism in traffic. Baylor, Colorado, Michigan State, Nebraska, and Minnesota have offered since late January.

“Olentangy (Ohio) 2024 tight end Gavin Grover debuts as an 88 and a high three-star. Grover is 6-foot-6, 226 pounds with a multi-sport background that includes basketball and volleyball. He shows great athleticism and ability to get off the floor in both of those sports at his size. He is certainly a player who could end up higher as the process goes along but Power Five schools are starting to notice.” — Allen Trieu, 247Sports Midwest analyst

“Robby Martin is the latest offensive lineman prospect out of Huntington (W. Va.) High, and schools have been heading there this spring to get a look at the 6-foot-4, 275-pound class of 2024 prospect. He lines up at left tackle, he shows quickness at the snap, and he is able to latch on and drive once he is engaged. He exhibits lower-body strength and an ability to sink his hips to win leverage. His athleticism shines most when he is asked to pull. He moves well in space. Martin’s offer list already includes Cincinnati, Miami, NC State, Penn State, Marshall, and West Virginia.
